Are you ready for a fresh start in the new year? There’s no better way to refresh and refocus than to start with a clean, clutter-free environment. These tips will help you declutter your home after the hustle and bustle of the holidays.

• Declutter your most lived-in area first. Whether it’s your living room, kitchen, or bedroom, gather all the items in the space and ask yourself these two questions:

  1. Do I love this item?
  2. Do I use it regularly?

  If the answer is "no," set the item aside to trash, recycle, sell, or donate.

• Clear your surfaces. Instead of diving into a large organizing project first, like your closet or pantry, start by clearing your small surfaces. Coffee tables, nightstands, and kitchen countertops all tend to collect clutter. Choose one surface and clear everything off (this is a great time to do some dusting!). Before adding the items back, pick up each one and determine whether you’d like to keep it, trash/recycle it, or donate it.
• Put away your clothes every night. We all know how easily that clothes pile on the floor—or the nearest chair—can get out of hand. Each night before bed, take an extra 30 seconds to fold, hang, or toss your clothes into the hamper instead of on the floor. The more frequently you do this, the quicker a good habit will form.
• Give every item a home. Don’t let items linger in your entryway, in front of your closet, or on your newly decluttered surfaces. Instead, take the time to designate a permanent home for each item. Once it has its own space, it will be easier to put it back each time you use it.
