Going out of town? Depending on how long you’ll be gone, here are a few things you should do around your home before you embark so you can leave with peace of mind:

Arrange for a friend to keep tabs on your house. If you don’t have someone house-sit your empty home, have someone you trust watch over your house while you’re gone. This might mean just a daily visual check or giving them the key so they can do a walk-through.

Put mail on hold. Go online and have USPS hold your mail until you’re back. Or, if a trusted friend is making a daily visit, they can put your mail in your house.

Turn off house water supply. By turning off the main water supply to your house, to prevent leaks that could damage your house. But leave the yard water supply on and arrange for lawn and garden watering.

Set timers for lights. Make your house look occupied while you’re gone by setting various lights (and maybe a radio) with timers. This is an easy, inexpensive way to keep burglars away.

Set thermostat, lock doors and windows, and set alarms.

We hope these few tips will help you relax and enjoy your vacation!
